Recommended Itinerary (5 Day Tour)
Your tour starts in Kailua- Kona on the west side of the Big Island of Hawaii heading south. Our guests travel in a custom outfitted tour bus with 2 professional guides accompanying you on your journey through paradise.
 


Punaluu Black Sand Beach

Monday: 8am departure from The Beach Shack traveling south along the ocean front on Alii drive along the Historic Kona Coast enjoying all the Hawaiian History that abounds as you travel, first stop at the Royal Kona Coffee plantation & museum. Next stop St Benedicts Painted church and on to Puuhonua O Honaunua (Place of Refuge) next stop South Point (the southern tip of the United States) and a hike to the Green Sands Beach and one of the best shore fishing areas in the world. Last stop of the day, The Black Sands Beach of Punaluu, here we set up camp for the night at the oceans edge and enjoy snorkeling with the sea turtles cooking under the stars and talking story of our first days adventures in Paradise.
 


Volcanoes National Park

Tuesday: 8am departure heading east from sea level climbing to 4000 foot elevation entering the Hawaii Volcanos National Park the home of Pele the goddess of fire. First stop is the visitor information Center then on to the Jagger Museum Observatory over looking the Kilauea Caldera and on the Thurston Lava Tube where you will explore the inside of a lava tube hundreds of years old. The park has hundreds of miles of hiking trails and one of them goes directly to a live lava flow where you will see Pele giving new life to the island of Hawaii. After a full day of exploring and enjoying this once in a life time experience we will set up camp in the Namakani Palo Campground and enjoy a great dinner and get ready for the next days adventures.
 


New Black Sand Beach at Kalapana

Wednesday: 8am departure heading east down Kilauea Volcano, then turning south back to sea level stopping at the Kalapana area where you will have a chance to hike to the lava flow where Pele completely destroyed the area in the 1984 eruption. Next stop the Ahalanui hot steam pools where we will enjoy lunch at the oceans side and take a refreshing dip in one of the mineral pools. After lunch we travel North up in Hilo town where we will take in the historic town and learn about it's turbulent past. After we have taken in the sights we are off north taking in Onomea Scenic Drive along one of the original highways that has been in service for more than 100 years that leads us to Akaka Falls where you will hike to 2 of the islands most popular waterfalls. Next stop Laupahoehoe Beach Park where we will set up camp for the night and enjoy and sleep one of the most beautiful campsites on earth, right on the oceans edge.
 


Waipio Valley

Thursday: 8am departure heading north stopping at the Tex Drive for a tasty breakfast and a chance to try the fresh Malasadas prepared at this road side eatery. A hearty meal will be a must as our next adventure will be the Famous Waipio Valley where you will have a chance to Hike in to one of the most beautiful places in the world and explore the valley and the treasures hidden within (Horseback tour optional) After another of our once in a lifetime adventures, the tour heads west along the northern reaches of the island climbing to 3000' through Paniolo county and the Biggest privately owned cattle ranch in the USA. With a short stop in Waimea town to load up on fresh dinner supplies we head west back down to sea level to Mahu Kona Beach Park where we will set up camp for the night and enjoy a hearty days meal once again with the ocean by our side.
 


Spencer Beach Park

Friday: 8am departure This being our last day the tour will head north to Hawi town the birthplace of King Kamehameha the Great, Lapakahi state park, the statue of Kamehameha and on to the end of the road where we find the Pololu Valley Lookout and your last hike in to our great islands beauty exploring a hidden black Sands beach along the first of the seven sister valleys that make up this northern part of the Big Island of Hawaii. The tour now will head west to Hawi town for lunch at a few of the eateries available and off again heading south arriving early afternoon to our final nights stay, Spencer Beach Park. Here we will set up our final camp for the night and spend the rest of the day on the beach with our toes in the sand and snorkeling and exploring this beautiful area. Dinner and a last night to share our fondest memories of our Big Island Camping Adventure.
 

Saturday: 8am departure, first stop Kona International Airport where those flying out early Saturday can get dropped off, then south back to Kona town and dropping off at our Beach Shack Location and local hotels. Aloha.
 

Itineraries will have a certain amount of flexibility and from time to time your tour leader may suggest changes. This may be due to road conditions, weather, or a visit to a special attraction that happens to be in progress. Flexibility is key and often a side diversion will be a highlight of the tour.
